Lezure: Special Request

We have secured a set from one of the biggest names in UK house and techno’s most exciting alias: Special Request.

The Special Request project harkens back to the halcyon days of pirate radio in the UK, with him citing Leeds’ Radio Air as his first contact with dance music growing up in the 80’s, particularly the “Soul Music” show, which mixed early house classics with the late 80’s idea of soul, which inspired the critically acclaimed first album released on Houndstooth of the same name. Jungle and hardcore are the most obvious reference points of the project, however there is much more to Special Request’s oeuvre, best displayed in his recent Fabriclive 91, which juxtaposes ambient pieces from the late Mika Vaino alongside neck breaking electro from DJ Stingray and back to the classic breaks of jungle legends like Dillinja. His DJing style also reflects this, playing both eclectic and classic sets frequently at Houndtooth HQ fabric as well as highlight sets at global festivals such as Dekmantel.

For a homage to UK dance music, their are few better accolades than to be recognised than UK dance institution XL Recordings, on which Special Request released the 3 part Modern Warfare series in 2015. These tracks appropriate hardcore and jungle tropes rather than emulating them, offering modern variations of these classic sounds at a techno pace. Special Request is also well known for his broad range and high quality of remixes, bringing his breaks heavy sound to artists as diverse as Lana Del Rey to Moderat, Jamie T to Tessela. It’s not very often that artists with as rich a history come to town, so head down early and dress to sweat!
